Schema Markup for AI Visibility (Beginner's Guide)
What is schema markup?
Imagine your website is a person introducing themselves. Without schema, the introduction sounds like: "Hi, I'm... uh... we do stuff." With schema, it sounds like: "Hi, I'm Sunny Dental Clinic, a dentist at 123 Main Street, Austin, open Monday to Friday 9–6, phone 555-1234."
Schema markup is a small block of code that states the facts about your business in a format Google and AI assistants read directly. Humans never see it — machines do.
Why AI assistants depend on it
When someone asks ChatGPT "find a dentist near me," the AI needs facts: names, addresses, hours, services. Websites with schema hand over those facts on a plate. Websites without it force the AI to guess from paragraphs of marketing text — and AI doesn't guess, it moves on to a competitor that made it easy.
What should your schema include?
- Business name and type (dentist, restaurant, plumber…)
- Full street address
- Phone number
- Opening hours
- Website URL and a short description
How to add it (10 minutes, no coding)
- Open our free Schema Generator.
- Fill in your business details.
- Click generate, then copy the code.
- Paste it into the <head> section of your homepage. (In WordPress: use a plugin like "Insert Headers and Footers." Or ask your developer — it's a 2-minute job.)
- Re-run the AI Visibility Grader — the schema check should turn green.
Common mistakes
- Wrong business type — pick the closest match (Dentist, not generic LocalBusiness, if you're a dentist).
- Outdated hours — update schema when hours change, especially holidays.
- Only on the homepage — ideally every page carries it, but homepage-first is fine to start.
